There are two distinct concepts.

The "soul animal" is not a real animal. It is more a symbolic representation of a person's character. A slick, ruthless liar might have a venomous snake as his soul animal, because the snake represents his character. But again, that is not a real animal. "If that person were an animal, which animal would he/she likely be?" That is the soul animal. It is usually purely symbolic, and is more of an approximation; it doesn't represent a character completely.
Witches and Elves have a spell (Seelentier erkennen; Identify Soul Animal) which lets them see another person's soul animal. That is, they can gauge some aspects of a person's character because they see that person as a symbolic animal.

And then there are familiars (Vertraute) or animal companions (Tierischer Begleiter).
Witches and Geodes (and Zibiljas and Goblin Shamans) have familiars. These are mostly from the same species as the soul animal of the witch or geode. Familiars are (semi-)intelligent and have a close connection to their human counterpart; there are rituals that let the witch see through her familiar's eyes, or talk to it, etc.

Some Elves have animal companions, which are normal animals. Steppe Elves always have a horse as their companion, even if they have a different soul animal. Of the other Elves, only some have a companion, often from the same species as their soul animal. Companions are not intelligent; they're like a good animal friend of the Elf, and some spells can be cast on Elf and companion together.

Thanks. Animal soul may have symbolic meaning, but there may be some more real issues. Look at Drakensang game. There is a quest where you must calm down angry elven spirit. It seemed that his animal soul went out of control because of Mage wars in Moorbridge when local woods was destroyed by magic. You had to give him his iama to use it to calm down and return to world of Light. So either his own mind went angry and animal soul is unimportant in this story or his animal soul was badly affected and heavily influenced him.

+ SPOILER
da Vanya can be rescued from a relinquished temple of a Mantra'Kim cult. He lies in a stone basin filled with a magical poison that induces a dream-filled stasis to keep him under control and to subvert his mind. During his captivity, a high-ranking servant of the Nameless One tries to use the opportunity to break his mind and convert him to his dark god (this is why the stasis continues even after the cult of the Mantra'kim was rooted in Drakensang).

How that servant of Nameless One get there? Was he false cultist working in disguise for Nameless? Fantasy "double agent"? :D

----------
- In 1032 (Efferd) there was serie of murders and horrible events in Kuslik. Did someone resolved these crimes? It sounds like another action of Malgorra/Yalstene's cult. Probably at this time Umbilicus was stolen from Kuslik.

- Did some faery live with elves in Tie Shianna (there could be gates/connections to faery realm)?

- When Umbracor returned to life (in Drakensang) is it known what he did in next years? Afaik he tried to prevent Pardona from reviving Pyrdacor in Drachenchronik. Did he come into Zze Tha to fight her?

Well, buit that's common woth "Lost Souls", which don#t find the way into their paradise (the Light with elves) for some reason. And as we said, elves and witches have a much deeper connection to their soul animal.

(The Nameless) God works in mysterious ways. It was a very high ranking agent of the Nameless One, so he might have gotten the knowledge directly from his God. ;)

Yes, that was about the Umbilicus. These events were described in the novel Der Kreis der Sechs. This October the second part Der Nabel der Welten will be released.

Afaik there weren't any (notable) fairies in Tie'Shianna. They did have magical portals, but those lead to the Isles of Myst (Inseln im Nebel), not to any fairy world.

I don't know that Drakensang quest, but if it's a real animal that has to be calmed down: There's some grey area for undead / wandering souls, where a special connection to a certain animal might be possible, or his soul animal taking form and substance, or something like that. The rest is, err, artistic licence. It usually doesn't work that way. Usually, there is no actual animal involved.

Fairies in Tie'Shianna: Though I wouldn't say that it's impossible. Essentially, we don't know; there might have been, or not.

Im interested in few things regarding pirates.

- Phileasson's character- Afaik its known that Phil. was pretty reasonable, cosmopolitan (unlikely for a Thorwalian) and honorable man. But despite all of that he was also Thorwalian pirate. I wonder if he was more reasonable or "mild" pirate, if he acted according to some personal codex of honor. Was there some boundaries he would never cross unlike other common pirates? For example: did he ever plunder common poor village? Did he ever attacked smaller ship that doesnt provide any challenge?

- Did Middle Realm establish some kind of premonitory/watch system around Great River to warn cities when pirate ships are spotted? Something like system of watch towers + carrier pigeons or sending messages by magic etc.
